Inspiring each student to become a lifelong learner and a contributing, responsible citizen

December 6, 2013

Colleagues, Parents, Students and Community Members,

Thank you.

Today was a hard day. Many students, families and colleagues were personally impacted by Daniel Cook's death and the two students who remain hospitalized.

Today was also a day of healing. Today I was once again reminded why I have dedicated 20 years of my career to the Kuna School District and to the education of our young people. Our colleagues and families who are suffering have received many blessings from the thousands of people who have offered help these last two days. An outpouring of people from around the nation have brought food, cards, money, counseling, gifts, notes, guidance and prayers. Every person I have spoken to today wanted to make sure that our grieving families had support. These same people also wanted to ensure our bus driver had the same level of support. We are indeed a community that takes care of each other.

I spoke with Daniel's dad this morning. As a former Marine, Mr. Cook was especially touched that we were flying our flag at half-mast today in Daniel's honor. He wanted to make sure I let you all know that he and his family are grateful for your support and care. Although the details of Daniel's memorial services have not been finalized, Mr. Cook said his family is planning on having Daniel's services on Saturday, December 14. I told him to prepare for a packed house.

I also received word today that our two students who remain hospitalized are doing well. Both students are now out of ICU and are on the path to recovery. The families are requesting privacy and do not want visitors at this time.

To my colleagues from Kuna, Meridian and Nampa, thank you for taking extra care of our children today. They needed you, and you provided them support from the moment they loaded the bus through their learning today. Not only did you take care of our children, but you also took care of my whole team. Many of you rode busses last night and today so our drivers and our students had extra support. You are all my heroes.

In service,
