Fiber Optic Networks:
Kuna's Ticket to the Fast Track
There has been much talk lately about fiber optic networks and why the district should implement one. Currently, fiber optic cables are connecting the District Office and the Middle School, and between the High School and Teed and Hubbard Elementary schools, while connection between the High School and Middle School is currently underway. This leads us to two questions: what are fiber optic cables and why should we use them at the district?
What are fiber optic cables?
Fiber optic cables are constructed of very thin glass or plastic fibers, hence the name. These fibers transmit light pulses, rather than electrical transmission through wires used in standard ethernet (i.e., twisted pair) or coaxial cables. Fiber optic cables have large bandwidths and very little attenuation, or signal degradation, even over long distances. This means that fiber optic networks can transmit much more information, faster and more reliably than similar non-fiber optic networks.
Why should KSD implement a fiber optic network?
As the KSD continues to grow, so do the needs and the resources to meet those needs. Emerging and changing technologies, such as the internet (the web), ISIMS, and the increase in technology usage place increased demands on the KSD network. Fiber optic cabling provides a solution to meet current network demands and prepare the district for future growth.
