Team,
I trust you all had a refreshing spring break and are working hard to finish the school year strong as we have much important work yet to accomplish with our students and teams.
Over the last fifteen years, an abundance of educational research has expanded our thinking about best practices that help improve student learning. The majority of the research has focused on the classroom and to a lesser degree the school system. Within the last five years, however, the the Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning (McRel) conducted ground-breaking research on the relationship between district leadership and student achievement. District leadership is largely defined as the Instructional District Office staff and School Board Trustees. The longevity of the individual members of the School Board and Superintendent has a positive effect on the average academic achievement of students in the district. Additionally, McRel identified six district-level leadership responsibilities with a statistically significant correlation to student achievement and documented the results in District Leadership that Works. A summary of these findings are as follows:
1. ensure collaborative goal setting.
2. establish nonnegotiable goals for achievement and instruction and agree to act on these goals.
3. create board alignment with and support of district goals.
4. monitor achievement and instructional goals.
5. allocate resources to support the goals for achievement and instruction.
6. establish a “defined autonomy” relationship with schools.
Given that four of the six findings are directly related to the setting and monitoring of goals, our Kuna School Board of Trustees have worked diligently over the course of the school year to update Board Goals and performance indicators for each goal. The goals have been organized as follows: 

Student Achievement Goals
1. Every student will learn and achieve to reach his or her full potential in education, career, and society.
2. Maintain and grow a high quality educational system, including student achievement, and community and parent partnerships.
Operational Goals
3. Hire, retain and invest in a highly qualified staff.
4. Maintain and cultivate safe, effective, and efficient operational and fiscal practices.
5. Improve community satisfaction, relations and communications.
In the coming months, I will be updating you on each of the goals and the corresponding performance indicators that are coming together to shape the district’s five-year strategic improvement plan. I’m excited to work with you to build upon our legacy of accomplishing great things for our kids and our community.

All three of the Kuna School District School Resource Officers, Det. Mark Hudson, Det. Krista Ducharme and Det. Hyrum Jones, were recently honored as Seven’s Heroes for filling-in as “dads” to girls in our community who did not have fathers to take them to the Daddy-Daughter Dance.

eaglescouts1Eagle Scouts and Hubbard-Teed PTO Collaborate for Kids

The Hubbard-Teed PTO purchased the Peaceful Playground Program to support the schools’ efforts to implement Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS). School data showed that students’ most prevalent negative behaviors were occurring on the playground. In addition to reteaching playground behaviors and structuring recess time for many students, the team recognized a need for more activities on the playground to keep students active and engaged in positive behaviors. With the help of two Eagle Scouts, KHS freshman Thayne Warnick and KHS junior Cameron Deason, the playground was painted over spring break.






eaglescouts2Eagle Scout Gives Back to His Former Elementary School


As KHS freshman Blake Morrill will testify, the playground at Indian Creek Elementary had not seen many changes from when he was a student there. However, with his help and dedication, the playground at Indian Creek Elementary is now full of games because of Blake’s Eagle Scout project. The playground now has 6 four square games, 5 hopscotch lanes, a number line, and a giant activity circle.
