Thank you for ensuring that we started the 2015-16 school year strong. I’ve had the opportunity to visit each school at least once the last two weeks, and I am grateful to work with such fine professionals who work hard each day on behalf of our children.

While the beginning of the school year brings excitement, it also brings change. Students change teachers. Teachers change classes. Colleagues change. Leadership changes. At the district level, we have had some recent changes and I’m writing to update you on these changes.

We are so fortunate in our district to have people with many talents who can lead in a variety of capacities. With Layne Saxton’s retirement, we had big shoes to fill. Any time we have a supervisor change, especially after school starts, I am proud of how our team comes together to keep our district moving forward. Two such people will help us better meet the needs of our students and schools:

Brenda Saxton will be our new Transportation Supervisor. Brenda comes to us with over 20 years of experience in Transportation including experience as a Transportation Supervisor in the Meridian School District. She worked in Meridian as they were experiencing huge growth so she has a wealth of experience to help us as we grow.

In addition to coordinating in-service training for bus drivers and custodians, Ben Gleaton will take over Layne’s responsibilities as the Custodial Supervisor. Ben has multiple years of experience as a supervisor in our district and in a district in Northern California and is happy to once again serve in this capacity.

Another change is in our Business Office. Melanie DeLashmutt has been offered an opportunity to work as the Human Resource Manager for a growing credit union in the valley, and she has decided to take the opportunity. Her last day is today.

I am happy for Melanie to have this opportunity to work in an environment that she feels passionate about and has multiple years of experience and expertise. We have benefited from her business experience in the time she has been here, and she has improved the business and HR departments by developing systems and structure. With such short notice, I've been working with our district office team to transition responsibilities. The Business Office team is awesome and are stepping up to help.
In order to provide all of you with HR support in the short term as I work to find a long-term solution, Earnie Lewis will be serving as our interim Human Resource Manager. Earnie is a retired school and district administrator having served over 30 years in the Nampa and Vallivue School Districts as well as serving multiple roles at the Idaho State Department of Education. Earnie will be starting his new responsibility on Tuesday and will serve as our interim HR Manager until we fill the position.

Thank you for your patience as these great people are transitioning into their roles. With any change comes opportunity. I am grateful to the many leaders who have jumped in to help--it's the Kuna Way.

School Board Meeting on Tuesday

Tuesday, September 8 is a school board meeting. The meeting begins with a special session at 5:45 and the regular session begins at 6:30. A complete agenda is available online.

For putting kids first and doing whatever it takes to help students succeed:
Dawn Meek, who graciously and professionally transferred from teaching 5th grade at Ross Elementary to 4th grade at Silver Trail Elementary to help balance class sizes across the district. Special thanks also to the Ross 5th grade teachers, Lori Johnson and Rachel Cyr, Silver Trail 4th grade teachers, Dan Blitman and Dan Hoehne, and to Instructional Coaches Danielle Walker, Kelly Adams and Mandy Hoehne for helping Dawn make this transition.

For leading from where you are:
Silver Trail Child Nutrition Team, who assisted a student with severe food allergies by providing him a place to store and warm his food so he can eat lunch with his friends in the school cafeteria.

For working hard and having fun together:
Michele Gumm, who coordinated a new first day of school tradition at the District Office--the Soup Kitchen.

For collaborating to solve problems:
Building Administrators and Office Managers, who worked with Ruth to resolve the VSP transition.
