Inspiring each student to become a lifelong learner and a contributing, responsible citizen

December 19, 2014

About a week ago a parent called me. Typically, when I a parent calls me, she is calling to get some help with an escalating conflict involving her child. Last week’s phone call was refreshingly different. The parent let me know how much she appreciated our middle school principal and her son’s homeroom teacher. She said that her son had recently been diagnosed with Type I diabetes and that the principal and homeroom teacher helped support her son during this difficult situation in his life. This included visiting her son while he was hospitalized. To top it off, she then proceeded to tell me what a great education her son was getting.

I was so proud! Part of this pride came in knowing that the example from KMS is true of all of our schools and departments. I am so proud to get to witness the daily gifts you give our students and their families.

In this season of gift giving, I often find the materialism of the season almost overwhelming, especially since the gifts we typically give each other at this time of year will not last.

The gifts you give your students do last.

You give the gift of knowledge, skills and dispositions. No one can ever take away what a person has learned so the gift of education is the best possible investment that anyone of us can make in ourselves and in others. Thank you for providing our children with gifts that will last.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
