November

Our year has been off to a wonderful start.  Students come to the library twice a week for 30 minute sessions. Their visits to the library are on the same day each week.

Our first visit is used primarily to check out our new library books for the week.  We try to encourage our students to check out one Accelerated Reader book in their ZPD range, and a second book of choice. The ZPD range is the distance between what a child can do with assistance and what the child can accomplish without assistance.  A child’s ZPD is constantly changing as he or she masters increasingly challenging tasks with time.  This is a reminder of how children can be stretched to reach higher level learning goals with adult guidance and support.

Our second visit is primarily to spend thirty minutes of quality, quiet, serene reading time.  If they have finished and tested on their A.R. book they may turn it in and check out a new one.

Every time a class visits the library I try to review different aspects of learning how to better find books in the library.  We also try to encourage them to always know the author and title of the book they want to check out so that they can familiarize themselves with the different authors and titles.

If you have seen some necklaces coming home with your child, you will see different little charms on them.  For each of the first five books your child reads and tests on they will earn a book charm.  The fifth charm will be a glow-in-the-dark book charm.  When they earn their glow-in-the-dark charm, they will also receive a Willy Nilly. He is our library’s favorite book-worm. He loves to read with us, and is awfully cute.  Ask your child if he/she has earned one yet.  I do everything possible to encourage each and every child to earn one.  I will help them select a book that is just right for them.  I call them our “Disneyland” book.  These cute little charms will also keep you informed of how much they are reading in a really fun way!

We are fortunate to have a wonderful room.  We have waterfalls, and surround sound with soft classical music.  We have soft lights and cozy areas to sit in.  It is my goal to give your child the most serene environment possible, where they can come and rest and snuggle with a good book.

Please stop by and read with us.

November’s theme in our library will be Kindness and Thankfulness.  We will be displaying books that are about things to be thankful for. In addition we have little note cards that can be taken home, filled out and colored, then returned and placed on our special trees, telling about things that we are thankful for.

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday!
