A Wreath for Emmett Till by Marilyn Nelson
A short book, only about 35 pages, but moving and an important read. Winner of the Coretta Scott King Book Award and honorable mention in the American Library Association judging, this book is about the 14 year-old African-American boy who was murdered, brutally, in 1955 and how his family, and America, had to wait over forty years for justice. It is written in poetry form and uses a variety of poetry techniques and drawings to tell Emmett's story. The book finishes with a page about who Emmett Till was and a description of the techniques Marilyn Nelson uses to tell this story in sonnet form. Short, but so very moving.
