Should Your Child Talk to a Counselor?
Children and teens sometimes need extra support. You may want to consider reaching out to a school counselor if you notice any of the following changes.
Watch for these signs:
- Acting noticeably more sullen, irritable, or defiant than usual
- Neglecting personal hygiene (long periods without showering, brushing teeth, etc.)
- Unusual tiredness, including sleeping much more than usual or isolating from others
- Unexplained stomachaches or other physical complaints
- Frequent tearfulness or emotional reactions beyond what is typical
- Dramatic changes in appetite
- Loss of interest in activities they once enjoyed
If You Know a Student Who Is Struggling
Early support can make a meaningful difference.
- Notify the school counselor or social worker if a student may benefit from additional support
- Ask about groups or clubs that offer opportunities for connection, encouragement, and belonging
