Since Christmas Break, school administration has addressed a small number of situations involving inappropriate student language that we do not want to see continue. While limited in number, it is important to address these incidents early so they do not develop into a larger pattern. With support from families at home, we are confident this can be addressed quickly.
These terms include:
- “Big back,” a term used to insult someone’s body
- “Asian Black Monkey,” a racially charged phrase
- In very rare cases, the “N word,” a racially charged term
We understand that sometimes students use terms without fully understanding their meaning or the harm they cause. This makes adult guidance and clear conversations especially important.
Using racist, derogatory, or profane language is harmful and runs counter to our shared commitment to building a safe, inclusive school community where every student feels respected and valued. This type of language, including swear words, are not tolerated at our school.
When incidents occur, they are addressed promptly and followed up on according to our schoolwide expectations. We are also asking for your partnership in addressing this at home by speaking with your child about respectful language, empathy, and the impact words can have on others. Specifically in upper grades.
Our goal is to work together to ensure that all students feel safe, supported, and able to learn in an environment rooted in respect. Thank you for your continued support and partnership.
Warm regards,
Principal Harding
