Preparing for the 2026-2027 School Year

  • Current 6th and 7th Grade students will register for classes for the 2026-2027 school year starting in February. Counselors will visit with students about the types of classes they can choose from. We will be sending class information home to parents.
  • High School Counselors will be at KMS to talk about high school courses in March.
  • Parent University will be held at KHS on February 4th at 6pm. This is for parents of incoming 6th grade students to find out what to expect in middle school.
  • Middle School Open House will be held on May 20th. More details will come about this event closer to the date.

Parents: We want you!

Kuna Middle School values the input of our parents. We will conduct another Parent Advisory Committee Meeting Monday evening at 5:45am-6:30pm in the KMS library. Administration will share what is going on at KMS and ask for feedback from parents. We hope you can join us!

Caution: Caffeine Pouches

We have had a few incidents of students bringing caffeine pouches to school. We discourage young people from using these pouches as they contain a large amount of caffeine that is not recommended for middle school aged children.

Here are some concerns for this age group:
Rapid Absorption: Because caffeine enters the bloodstream directly, effects are felt faster than consuming coffee.
Usage Limits: The maximum recommended daily caffeine intake for adults is 400 mg. Using multiple high-concentration pouches can easily exceed this, leading to rapid heart rate, nervousness, or, in extreme cases, toxicity.
Safety Notice: These products are generally marketed for adults (18+); however, their popularity among teenagers has raised significant health concerns regarding excessive intake.

Often caffeine pouches look like nicotine pouches and students have been sent to the office when teachers have concerns. Please talk to your children about responsible consumption of caffeine.

Advisory Update

This week in advisory, students worked on setting themselves up for a strong start to second semester.

On Tuesday, students cleaned out and reorganized their backpacks. The goal was to help them start the new semester with fewer distractions, better organization, and systems that support daily success.

For the remainder of the week, students committed to the “One Word” challenge. They selected one word they will focus on for the semester and created posters that include a definition, synonyms, a quote, a visual, and a plan for how they will apply that word in their daily choices. These posters will be displayed in teachers’ rooms as a visual reminder of each student’s commitment to their chosen word throughout the semester.

Families can support this challenge by asking their student what word they chose and why it matters to them. Checking in periodically about how they are applying their word at school or at home can help students stay focused and accountable.
Nine colorful posters display student definitions and visuals for words like Independence, Positivity, and Strong.

WIN

(What I Need)

Math WIN Time & New Gifted & Talented WIN Program

Students have switched to new WIN groups. Instruction for this session will focus on Math extension through WIN lessons.

Research shows that students who spend 45 minutes on MyPath a week and who participate in iReady lessons grow more than typical on their ISAT scores each year.

Kuna Middle School students have shown incredible growth from the Fall Diagnostic to the Winter Diagnostic with many students already reaching their goals and already expected to be proficient on the ISATs at the end of the year! Great work KMS students! Don't forget, students can work on MyPath at home.

We are excited to share that beginning next week, qualifying students will have the opportunity to participate in an Advanced Enrichment WIN Program designed to challenge and inspire high-achieving learners. This opportunity is available to students who qualify for the KSD Gifted and Talented Program or who meet the program’s minimum criteria. for grades and proficiency scores.

Qualifying students will remain in this Advanced WIN Program for the remainder of the school year. Students will engage in meaningful, project-based learning that encourages curiosity, creativity, and independence. Instruction will focus on strengthening critical reasoning, advanced reading and writing skills, and other higher-order thinking skills, while providing an environment where students can collaborate with peers and explore learning at a deeper level.
