Safe Routes to School

Student safety is so important to the entire Kuna community. Recently, in both Kuna and surrounding school districts, there have been incidents of accidents and unsafe driving where students have been injured or have resulted in near misses. A reminder for all drivers to adhere to posted school zone speed limits. Students who walk, ride bikes, scooters, e-bikes, or e-scooters to school need to be aware of their surrounding, especially on dark mornings or when snow or ice are on the ground. It is difficult for vehicles to see pedestrians in the dark when students wear dark clothing. When students have headphones or Bluetooth helmets, they cannot hear approaching traffic making it even more difficult to be aware of surroundings.

Students should wear clothing that allows them to be seen. They should be aware of surrounds including being able to see and hear approaching traffic or voice directions. Students who ride bikes, scooters, e-bikes, or e-scooters should wear a helmet and follow the rules of the road. They must be aware of pedestrians. Pedestrians have the right of way. Students need to walk all bikes and scooters on campus, they may not ride them on campus.

Parents, please talk to your children about road safety and their awareness of their surroundings when walking or riding to school, especially when it's dark. Together, with improved safety protocols and awareness, we could help save a child's life.

Preparing for the 2026-2027 School Year

  • Current 6th and 7th Grade students will register for classes for the 2026-2027 school year starting in February. Counselors will visit with students about the types of classes they can choose from. We will be sending class information home to parents.
  • High School Counselors will be at KMS to talk about high school courses in March.
  • Parent University for incoming 6th grade parents will be held in the KHS cafeteria on February 4th at 6pm. This is for parents of incoming 6th grade students to find out what to expect in middle school.
  • Middle School Open House for incoming 6th grade students and their parents will be held on May 20th.
  • Our 2026-2027 Back To School Night Open House for all parents and students will happen in the Fall with the date to be determined.

Caution: Caffeine Pouches

We have had a few incidents of students bringing caffeine pouches to school. We discourage young people from using these pouches as they contain a large amount of caffeine that is not recommended for middle school aged children.

Here are some concerns for this age group:
Rapid Absorption: Because caffeine enters the bloodstream directly, effects are felt faster than consuming coffee.
Usage Limits: The maximum recommended daily caffeine intake for adults is 400 mg. Using multiple high-concentration pouches can easily exceed this, leading to rapid heart rate, nervousness, or, in extreme cases, toxicity.
Safety Notice: These products are generally marketed for adults (18+); however, their popularity among teenagers has raised significant health concerns regarding excessive intake.

Often caffeine pouches look like nicotine pouches and students have been sent to the office when teachers have concerns. Please talk to your children about responsible consumption of caffeine.

Advisory Update

This week in advisory, students focused on improving their note-taking skills using the Cornell method. Instead of reading a text, students practiced taking notes by watching videos that demonstrate our school’s four values—KAVE: Kindness, Accountability, Good Vibes, and Effort. These videos were created by Mr. Tharpe’s Intro to Theatre class and do a great job showing our values in action. The videos are linked below for you to watch as well.

Additionally, we have resumed weekly grade checks on Fridays. Parents should watch for an email from their student’s advisory teacher if their child currently has a D or F in any class. No email will be sent if grades are passing.

WIN

(What I Need)

Math WIN Time & New Gifted & Talented WIN Program

Students have switched to new WIN groups. Instruction for this session will focus on Math extension through WIN lessons.

Research shows that students who spend 45 minutes on MyPath a week and who participate in iReady lessons grow more than typical on their ISAT scores each year.

Kuna Middle School students have shown incredible growth from the Fall Diagnostic to the Winter Diagnostic with many students already reaching their goals and already expected to be proficient on the ISATs at the end of the year! Great work KMS students! Don't forget, students can work on MyPath at home.

We are excited to share that we have begun our Advanced Enrichment WIN Program designed to challenge and inspire high-achieving learners. This opportunity is available to students who qualify for the KSD Gifted and Talented Program or who meet the program’s minimum criteria for grades and proficiency scores.

Qualifying students will remain in this Advanced WIN Program for the remainder of the school year. Students will engage in meaningful, project-based learning that encourages curiosity, creativity, and independence. Instruction will focus on strengthening critical reasoning, advanced reading and writing skills, and other higher-order thinking skills, while providing an environment where students can collaborate with peers and explore learning at a deeper level.

A Well-Deserved Reward

Eighth grade students on Team B² received a popcorn party for winning the MyPath competition. Way to go!
